There can be conflicting information about what is compostable in Hamilton County. In a regular backyard composting system, many things can be added to create amazing compost. However, there is a difference between green and brown material.
Greens
- fruit scraps
- vegetable scraps
- coffee ground and filters
- tea bags
- green grass clippings and plants
- green plant trimmings
- eggshells

Browns
- fallen leaves and grass clippings
- dead flowers and plants
- egg shells
- straw and hay
- needles of conifer trees
- untreated saw dust and wood chips
- ash from wood fires
- corn stalks
- twigs/branches/bark (broken up small)
- newspaper and not-glossy paper and cardboard
- dryer lint
