How to Start

To start composting you’ll need to consider which type of composting method will work best for you (see our pages “Easy Techniques” and “Advanced Techniques” for reference and ideas!)

In general, most composting uses “greens” such as food scraps– vegetables, fruits, egg shells and coffee grounds, etc. Also it is good to keep in mind that there are certain types of foods, like animal byproducts (meat and dairy), that will not work well in most composts.

Unless you are using Bokashi composting, you will also need “browns” which can be dead leaves or small twigs, etc.

(More examples of what can be used can be found on our pages “What to Compost” and “What NOT to Compost”).

The greens and browns add nitrogen and carbon (respectively) to the compost. It is important to consider this when starting because you will need both for your compost to be successful.
