Easy Techniques

What you’ll need:

  • A bin to put the compost in
  • Greens, browns, and water
  • A shady, dry spot to keep the bin

In your bin, you’ll want an approximate 50:50 of browns to greens. Browns, such as dead leaves or branches and twigs, will provide carbon to the compost. Greens, such as grass clippings, fruits/vegetables, and egg shells, will provide nitrogen to the compost. (For a more extensive list, visit our “What to Compost Page”).

When adding materials to the bin, alternate greens and browns. Adding water can help maintain and break down the compost material. It is also important to regularly mix the compost to aerate it.

Keep the compost bin in a dry, shaded place and be patient. It can take time to create a good compost!
